Shimla

Sitting majestically above the searing plains, the British designated Shimla as the summer capital during their rule of India. Nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas, the town reflects this British connection. Shimla’s upper ridge is comprised mostly of buildings in the Victorian style, while the lower slopes are occupied by Indian bazaars and restaurants.

Today, Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh, one of India’s northern most states. Despite Shimla’s reputation as a picturesque destination, development opportunities persist. Among the most vulnerable segments are families living in the greater district as migrant workers.
